Mobile key fob programming
When a fob stops working, the cause is usually one of three things: a dead battery, a fob that has lost its programming, or a fob that has genuinely failed. They look identical from the driver seat and cost very different amounts to fix.
We diagnose and, where the vehicle allows it, program remotes and proximity fobs on site. Sometimes the honest answer is that you need a two-dollar battery, and we will say so.

Work done at your vehicle
Start with the cheapest explanation and work up. That order saves customers money more often than anything else we do.
Dead fob battery
The most common cause and the cheapest fix. Range dropping off gradually before failing completely is the classic sign.
Lost programming
The fob is physically fine but the vehicle no longer recognizes it. Re-programming may resolve this on eligible vehicles.
Water or impact damage
A fob through the wash or off the pavement may have internal damage. Replacement is usually the realistic route.
Worn buttons
Buttons that need hard presses or no longer respond. Sometimes a shell replacement helps, sometimes the electronics are done.
Proximity not detected
Push-to-start vehicles that no longer sense the fob. Could be battery, could be programming, could be the vehicle itself.
Added spare remote
Programming an additional remote so a second driver is not dependent on the only working fob.
Fob not responding?
No dispatch center. No call-center middleman. Speak directly with the technician who will come to you.
For emergency service, calling is the fastest option.
A couple of quick checks can tell you whether this is a small problem or a real one, and it costs nothing to look.
Try the spare fob if you have one. If the spare works, the first fob is the problem.
Replace the fob battery, which is often a coin cell and inexpensive.
Check whether the key still starts the vehicle mechanically.
Note whether the fob stopped all at once or faded over weeks.
Note whether some buttons work and others do not.
Fob programming follows the same eligibility rules as other automotive key work, because it uses the same vehicle systems.

Automotive key work is primarily for non-German vehicles.
VATS systems are not serviced.
Supported model years are primarily 1999 through 2022.
Eligibility depends on the year, make, model, key system, and whether any working key remains.
Lockout service and key programming are separate questions with separate eligibility.
Every key job is confirmed by phone before it is scheduled.
Is it the battery or the fob?
Start with the battery, since it is inexpensive and the most common cause. If a fresh battery changes nothing and a spare fob works fine, the original fob is likely the issue.
Can you program a fob at my house?
Yes, for eligible vehicles. Fob programming is done at the vehicle, so your driveway or workplace parking lot works as long as the vehicle is safely accessible.
Will an online fob work?
Sometimes. Aftermarket quality is inconsistent and some fobs will not program reliably regardless of equipment. Tell us what you ordered and we will give you an honest expectation.
Can you match a fob to a key I already have?
On many vehicles, yes. Whether the fob and key functions are programmed together or separately depends on the system, which is part of what we confirm on the phone.
My fob works but the car will not start. Why?
That usually separates the remote side from the immobilizer side. The buttons can be programmed while the engine-start recognition is not, which points toward key programming rather than the fob itself.
