Mobile key programming
Cutting a key is mechanical. Programming is electronic. A correctly cut key that has not been programmed will turn in the door and still refuse to start the engine, which surprises a lot of people.
We perform eligible programming on site using diagnostic equipment brought to the vehicle. The question is never whether programming is possible in general, but whether it is possible on your specific vehicle.
Programming performed at the vehicle
Transponder and remote keys
Eligibility checked before scheduling
Your vehicle keeps a list of keys it recognizes. Programming is the process of adding a key to that list, and in some cases removing keys that should no longer work.
Adding a new key
Teaching the vehicle to recognize an additional key so it will start the engine and operate the immobilizer correctly.
Erasing lost keys
On many vehicles, previously programmed keys can be removed from memory so a lost key no longer starts the vehicle.
All-keys-lost programming
Building a first recognized key from scratch. Possible on eligible vehicles, considerably more involved than adding a spare.
Remote functions
Programming lock, unlock, and trunk functions so the buttons work along with the engine-start side of the key.
Replacing a failed key
When a key has stopped being recognized, a replacement needs both correct cutting and correct programming.
Diagnosis first
Sometimes the key is fine and something else is at fault. We would rather identify that than sell you programming you do not need.
Key turns but will not start?
No dispatch center. No call-center middleman. Speak directly with the technician who will come to you.
For emergency service, calling is the fastest option.
These get used interchangeably, but they are different jobs and sometimes you only need one of them.
You need cutting when there is no physical key that fits the locks and ignition.
You need programming when the vehicle does not recognize an otherwise correct key.
Most modern replacements need both, performed in the right order.
A fob that opens doors but does not start the car usually points to the programming side.
If nothing electronic responds at all, the problem may be a battery or the vehicle rather than programming.
Programming capability is decided by the vehicle, not by effort. Some systems are open to aftermarket equipment and some are deliberately locked to dealer tools.
We check this before scheduling so you are not paying for a trip that ends in a shrug.
Automotive key work is primarily for non-German vehicles.
VATS systems are not serviced.
Supported model years are primarily 1999 through 2022.
Eligibility depends on the year, make, model, key system, and whether any working key remains.
Lockout service and key programming are separate questions with separate eligibility.
Every key job is confirmed by phone before it is scheduled.
Why will my new key not start the car?
Almost always because it has been cut but not programmed. The mechanical part fits, so the door and ignition behave normally, but the vehicle does not yet recognize the key electronically.
Can you disable a key I lost?
On many vehicles, yes. Erasing previously programmed keys from vehicle memory is supported on a good number of systems, and it is worth doing when a key disappears rather than simply breaks.
Can programming happen without towing?
That is the point of mobile service. Programming is done at the vehicle with equipment we bring, provided the vehicle is eligible and parked somewhere safe to work.
Do you program keys for every make?
No. Work is primarily for non-German vehicles, mainly model years 1999 through 2022, and we do not service VATS systems. Some other systems also require dealer-only equipment.
Will you program a key I supply?
Sometimes. Aftermarket key quality varies widely and some simply will not take a program reliably. Tell us what you have and we will give you an honest read before committing.
Not sure if your vehicle qualifies?
Call with the year, make, and model and we will tell you what is realistic before anyone drives out.
